One of my frustrations as I try to learn more about bass fishing is that many of the articles, videos and books that discuss bass fishing are more relevant in the South than the North. This means lure sizes, lure colors/finish patterns, and seasonal tips don’t necessarily fit our fish and waters in New England.

I use the above sources as inputs but I don’t run out and buy everything they suggest (you shouldn’t either, even if you live in the South). Instead I think about how their advice might translate to my circumstances. I might try the same concept in a different size or color. I might have something in my tackle assortment that fits or I might decide to make a purchase if the idea seems strong enough.

This week, in and just after some rain, in 65 degree water, I caught a perch followed by three large mouth bass within about 45 minutes. The perch and two bass came on a Rapala Husky Jerk jerkbait in the silver color with black on top. This is a 4″ long, suspending lure that weighs 3/8 ounce. The other bass came on a Strike King KVD Tandem Willow Spinnerbait in Chartreuse/White also at 3/8 ounce. The jerkbait was on spinning gear and the spinnerbait was on baitcasting gear.

These lure choices were adaptations of advice in some YouTube videos (thanks Steve Rogers and Randy Blaukat and Wired2Fish articles.

It is interesting that these two lures are very different styles and colors yet caught very similar fish in the same location, weather and time. It gives me hope that the bass are starting to feed like winter is coming and it proves that there isn’t necessarily one bait that is THE bait in one location, weather and time situation.

Topwater attempts were not successful on this outing. There was some wind and a bunch of acorns were falling into the water from a nearby tree.

With 120+ acres of water to search, I ended up catching these fish almost within casting distance of my dock. I was still glad to have the boat but it wasn’t essential this time out.
